Whispers & Wonders: Folklore from Wareham and Beyond
Step into the mysterious world of Dorset's folklore with our temporary exhibition, exploring the charms, superstitions, and curious objects that once shaped daily life in Wareham and the surrounding area.
Discover objects with intriguing stories:
A 19th-century leather shoe found near Streche Road, not a concealed charm itself, but an example of the kind of everyday object often hidden in buildings for protection.
A 1950s Chad Valley humming spin top, featuring the nursery rhyme “I owe you five farthings, say the bells of St. Martin’s”, delighting children with motion, sound, and a touch of the uncanny.
The exhibition highlights the interplay between everyday life and folklore, showing how local communities once blended practicality, play, and superstition. It’s a unique opportunity to explore the strange, the magical, and the historical all in one small but captivating display.
