Wareham, Dorset, United Kingdom
Wareham Town Museum
In the early 2000s, the remarkable remains of a woman from the Iron Age were discovered near Kimmeridge in Dorset, eroding from the cliffs. The Kimmeridge Woman, thought to have lived sometime between the end of the 1st Century BC and the end of 1st Century AD, provides valuable insight into the lives of people in prehistoric Britain. Her remains were meticulously studied by archaeologists, revealing key details about her diet, health, and the ancient world she lived in. Her real skeletal remains, generously loaned by Bournemouth University, are on display at the museum, allowing visitors to see these incredible fragments of the past up close.
The Research and Facial Reconstruction
This exhibition explores the cutting-edge research conducted by Bournemouth University, which has played a crucial role in uncovering the story of the Kimmeridge Woman. Through a combination of scientific techniques, including carbon dating and Kimmeridge Womanforensic anthropology, we can piece together an image of her diet, her physical characteristics, and even her possible social standing. The exhibit also highlights the cultural significance of her burial and what it tells us about life in this distant past.
A central part of this exhibition is the facial reconstruction of the Kimmeridge Woman, created by Amber Manning, an MSc student at Bournemouth University. Amber's work, based on the skeletal evidence, offers a unique and personal glimpse into what the Kimmeridge Woman might have looked like when she was alive. This remarkable reconstruction helps visitors connect more deeply with the past, offering a face to the history.
